Respectful online communication
A new initiative from An Garda Síochána aims to promote respectful communication through social networking sites. Amid growing concern at the level of abusive language online, Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan said, “What we wouldn’t or shouldn’t say to each other directly, we shouldn’t say just because we are separated by computer screens or mobile telephones. The words still hurt and harm – even though they are typed.” A schools programme will be introduced for 5th class pupils.
Campaign to criminalise the “buying” of sex
A whole flurry of newspaper articles, letters and comments surrounded RTE’s Prime Time documentary “Profiting from Prostitution” last week. Help group Ruhama said the programme left “no stone unturned in exposing the reality of the Irish sex trade”.
